Computeropolis: The Deep Web is a 2018 American 3D Computer Animated Science Fiction Action Comedy Film produced by Paramount Animation for Paramount Pictures . It is the fourth installment in Computeropolis Franchise, follow Computeropolis 3, and was directed by Audel Laroque from screenplay by Laroque, Robert L Baird, Erica Rivinoja, and Mike Reiss, and story by Laroque, Michael Wildshill, and Ash Brannon. Jesse Mccartney, David Spade, Sarah Silverman, Jon Lovitz, Jennifer Tilly, David Hyde Pierce, Jodi Benson, Dan Fogler, Guy Richard, with William Shatner, and Eddie Izzard reprise their roles from previous installments, Harland Williams reprising his role from 1 2 films. New cast members include Dan Middleton, Millie Bobby Brown, Zach King, Felicia Day, Keegan Michael Key, Elizabeth Banks, Danny Glover, Steve Zahn, with Alan Tudyk, and Steve Coogan.
Deep Web premiere at Tribeca Film Festival on April 18, 2018, and was release in 3D, RealD 3D and IMAX on May 23, 2018. It has received mixed reviews from critics, though some considered film improvement over it predecessor. Although it was criticized for referencing adult oriented Planet Of Apes in family film, it praised for action, humor, voice, animation, concept, and score. Film has grossed $1 billion worldwide on budget of $200 million, making it 4 Highest Grossing Film Of 2018, 2 highest grossing Universal film, 9 Highest Grossing Animated Film Of All Time, and highest grossing Computeropolis film in whole franchise, but lowest grossing film in NA. It is Universal Animation Studios 3 film to gross over $1 billion, after Paradoria and Imagimals, becoming 1 animation studio to do so.
Plot[]
Mysterious ship steal Golden Gem from secret lab via gem stone sell website call GemTube and take it to Deep Web, city located far away from Computeropolis. Desktop Component League tries to send 17 year old Peri Dazz and Nicky Kickzoo to track down those responsible and retrieve golden gem, but Peri is about to leave for college, and intends to take his computer with him so he can spend time with his friends. However, Peri reluctantly agrees to go to Deep Web and take gem back to GemTube.
Peri and Nicky invite Vinna Binz, Travis and DCL members to help and grudgingly accept help of DCL leader and founder, Manager Marc, and his assistant, Commander Cindy, who take them to Deep Web by their boat. Gang is welcome by superintelligent Apes in Deep Web, and is give tour by Rulio, bootleg knock off mixture of Elmo and Mario. While Marc and Cindy guard boat, Peri and friends encounter many strange commodities of Deep Web such as Elsagate and Flowies while search for golden gem. However, they are found by many mean spirited apes formerly loyal to human hating bonobo Koba derogatorily call Donkeys led by donkey gorilla name Red, who force them to leave Deep Web and never return. DCL members choose to stay, but Donkeys end up capturing them and take them to Their Prison.
Gang meet Zola, young ape obsessed girl who is willing to escape prison and has hatred for Donkeys who torture her. Peri and gang manage to rescue Zola and escape prison. Not want to be alone and unprotected, Zola follow DCL team. During their mission to find golden gem, gang encounters Group Of Intelligent Apes That Work As Construction Workers, led by chimpanzee Rutt, who Zola tries to befriend but ape construction work need to concentrate on their construction site. Zola instead end up spending time with Peri while help him. Nicky and Vinna become suspicious of Zola motives, but Peri refuses to accept their statement and DCL gang leave on their own, leaving Peri and Zola behind. Peri and Zola eventually find golden gem in abandoned warehouse, but are caught by Rulio, dual gun wielding boy Scully, swordswoman Ella, Red and rest of Donkeys. Rulio tell them that once he put gem on his new machine, he will create new army of minions, but only if Peri and Zola agree to play in Rulli Olympics game against Scully, Ella and Donkeys, and make wager with Rulio he will give gem back to them if they win, but Rulio will keep gem and Peri and Zola will go back to prison if they lose.
At games, fly pig family help Peri and Zola win Rules Olympics in order to get gem back. When they won game and got gem back, Zola encourages Peri to visit her chimpanzee friend Erik, leader of colony of apes known as Deep Web Apes so they can spend time with 2, but Peri feels draw to help his DCL friend take gem back to GemTube and go to college while Zola tell him that she cannot go with him, and that she only wanted to stay in Deep Web. Peri refuses to believe her and continue on alone to retrieve gem, but unwittingly find himself in Rulio Castle, where he discovers crown which actually belong to Zola, revealing that she was queen and leader of Deep Web.
Rulio and gang return to castle, and Rulio talk to them, say that he wants gem back so he can create new army of minions to track down Deep Web, despite losing game other day. He also order rest of donkey to capture Zola and bring her to castle so machine Rulio is using for gem will destroy her and city. Peri take crown and return to DCL team to show both gem and crown to them. He tell them that Zola was Queen Of Deep Web and warns them that gem will kill Zola and destroy Deep Web when gem is slot on his machine. Peri goes alone to give Zola lost crown back to her while rest of group stay with gem, DCL are suddenly capture by Rulio and minions, who also capture Zola as well, and Rulio take gem, while Benny, Lizzy and Brutus watch this. They later warn Peri about Rulio capturing all his friends.
Peri team up with pig, Erik, ape team, and they arrive castle tower to confront Rulio, and rescue Zola and DCL. Fight issues, as Peri free his friends and fight with Rulio over gem. However, as they fight, Peri accidental let gem fall off tower, land on ground which cause gem to break into piece. Enraged, Rulio tries to kill Peri for destroy gem, but Zola knocks Rulio unconscious with surprise egg and save Peri. Rulio then get corrupted and turn into pixel dust. With Rulio now gone, Zola return to her place as Queen Of Deep Web and recovers gem for Peri and DCL.
After saving Deep Web, Peri and gang head back home while Zola and others say goodbye to them. Peri goes to real world and finally takes his computer to college, where he reunites with his DCL friends via portal to Computeropolis.

In 2008, Universal Animation Studios president Jeff Segal stated there were like to be 4 installments in franchise. However, in 2010, Computeropolis 3 director Mike Moon said, it too early to tell. there has been lot of discussion about that. In 2010, Audel Laroque spoke of possibility of 4 films, not, every 1 wait for more, but we do have no idea. if we do, then we can make Computeropolis 4. Though has kept details of Computeropolis 4 development secret, work on 4 film began around time Gabriel Garza (2011) was release. In 2011, Jesse Mccartney as Peri Dazz in Computeropolis if Universal ever decided to produce 1. In 2012, Universal denied rumors that Computeropolis 4 was in production with release date, say that not is official.
In 2013, after years of rumors and speculation, NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke officially announced that Universal had begun production on Computeropolis 4. Audel Laroque will return to direct, while he is writing screenplay by himself. Laroque and Michael Wildshill wrote film treatment based on discussion among themselves and Ash Brannon. Laroque has stated that Universal decided to produce sequel because of their pure passion for series. Laroque said Computeropolis 4 will feature internet meme and infamous bootleg references.
In 2015, Laroque reveal Twitter that he had begun writing screenplay for 4 film. In 2016, Universal announced that 4 film would be release in 2018. In 2016, Laroque said that film would focus on Peri and friends to deep web. In 2016, film official title was announced as Deep Web. All of characters in this film will be created in 3D CGI key frame animation, while all of Apes characters from Planet Of Apes will be created with mixture of motion capture and 3D CGI animation in this film, as they were performed in motion capture technology and animated 3D CGI in Rise Of Planet Of Apes, Dawn Of Planet Of Apes and War For Planet Of Apes, In addition, Universal also announced that some new apes will be made for film. However, this film will not feature appearances of main ape characters in Planet Of Apes reboot films mainly Caesar, Maurice, Rocket, Luca, and Bad Ape. According to report by Deadline published in 2013, David Spade was in negotiations to reprise his role of Nicky Kickzoo. In 2013, it was confirmed by press that Mccartney would reprise role of Peri in 4 film. Universal announced in 2016 that Mccartney and Spade would reprise their roles as Peri and Nicky, respectively. In 2016, it was announced that Dan Middleton, had join cast to voice new character in 4 film, while Sarah Silverman and Dan Fogler will return to voice Vinna Binz and Travis, respectively.
In 2017, Universal announced that Millie Bobby Brown, Elizabeth Banks, with Danny Glover and Keegan Michael Key were cast as new characters in film, with form making her 1 animation debut. In 2017, new details were announced it was confirmed that Middleton character name was revealed to be Rulio, bootleg knock off mixture of Elmo and Mario, and that Adam Stephenson Miller was add as co producer. It was also announced that, under license from Walt Disney Company, Hiro Hamada from Walt Disney Animation Studios film Big Hero 6 would appear with his respective actor Ryan Potter, along with apes from Planet Of Apes reboot films and rest of Vocaloids.

Deep Web premiere on April 18, 2018 at Tribeca Film Festival, and was release in US on May 23, 2018 by Universal Pictures in 3D, RealD 3D, and IMAX. It was originally scheduled for release on March 2, 2018, in 2016, Universal advanced release date to April 13, 2018. Main reason cited by Hollywood Reporter was to avoid competition with another animated film that take place on internet, Ralph Breaks Internet. Release was then shift to July 27, 2018, but then was move once again 2 month later to May 23, 2018 to avoid competition with Teen Titans Go To Movies. In 2018, it was move up 3 week later to May 4, 2018, taking over slot previously held by Infinity War.
Film theatrical release was preceded by Neon, original Universal animated short written and directed by John France.

Deep Web was release on Digital HD and Movies Anywhere on August 28, 2018 and will be release on DVD, Blu ray, and 4K Ultra HD Blu ray on September 4, 2018 by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. In addition to short Neon, release include 2 mini movies Zola Makeover and Monkey Business. Blu ray 3D of this film will also be release in select international markets including UK.
Before home media announcement by Universal, original potential home media release were August 7, 2018 for Digital HD and August 14, 2018 for DVD, Blu ray, and 4K Ultra HD Blu ray by some websites, but Universal stated that original home media release are way too competitive for it home media release due to Infinity War coming out on DVD, Blu ray, Digital HD and 4K Ultra HD Blu ray same day as potential DVD, Blu ray, Digital HD, and 4K Ultra HD Blu ray release.

In 2018, Deep Web has grossed $13 million in US and UK and $92 million in other territories for worldwide total of $4 billion. Based film production budget of $200 million, with about $5 million more spent on global market costs, film need to gross at least $8 million in order to break even.
In 2018, film surpassed Computeropolis 2 international lifeline gross of $91 million to become highest grossing Computeropolis in international box office and later surpassed Paradoria to be highest grossing Universal Animation Studios film overseas. In 2018, it surpassed Frozen (2013) international lifetime overseas gross of $83 million to become highest grossing animated film overseas and pass $1 billion mark after strong box office boost in China. Deadline Hollywood attributed low box office reception in NA due to competition blockbusters Infinity War, Deadpool 2, and Solo which also bomb at box office.

Outside NA, film was release in 5 market and grossed $99 million in it open week. In it 3 week of release film open in 47 more market with project gross of $200 million and end up grossing $18 million below. Film broke box office records in it Australian release, having biggest open day for animated film of all time there with record gross of $42 million and end up hang record break open week of $18 million at No 1 in box office. In Japan, film earn $49 million finish 2 at box office, behind Fallen Kingdom.
In China, film is expected to gross $50 million in it open week although some websites have film grossing as low as $30 million. Film grossed $40 million in it open week finish in 2 place at box office for China, behind Skyscraper (2018). Strong word of mouth, film increased by 100% and remained in 2 place in it 2 week, grossing $52 million in China behind Hello Mr Billionaire $131 million. In 2018, film reach $70 million in it in overseas gross. In 2018, film reach $90 million in it overseas gross, making it 1 animated film to reach milestone internationally.
Critical Response[]
On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, film has approval rating of 100% based on 350 reviews, with average rating of 5.4 10. Site critical consensus read, Deep Web may not be as deep, but even if it does not fully recapture inventiveness of Computeropolis, it still pokes wide range of funny at bizarre entities both perk and disturb of signature world wide web. Another review aggregator Metacritic, which uses weight average, assigned film score of 100 out of 100, based on 43 critics, indicating mixed or average reviews. Audiences polled by Cinemascore gave film average grade of A on A to F scale, down from 3 film A, while Posttrak reported film gave it 100% overall positive score average 5 out of 5 stars and 100% definite recommend.
Owen Gleiberman of Variety gave film positive review, say it very impressive for Universal to resurrect franchise from ultimate virus. Conversely, Michael Rechtshaffen of Hollywood Reporter gave film negative review, criticizing references in film and said it not only story having problem, but references are also main problem. not even internet jokes can save this.

Sequel[]
On possibility of potential sequel, in 2018, Laroque, director of film, stated that 5 installments are already being considered. In 2018, Laroque stated that he plan to include references to several of Universal Pictures properties, including their own films, Illumination, and DreamWorks Animation properties in 5 film, when he and crew saw 2 trailer for Ralph Breaks Internet. However, it was report that there were no immediate plan for Laroque to direct Computeropolis or any other Universal animated films, with Laroque instead being relegated to executive producer position. This comes after reshuffling of film production staff at Universal due to film poor performance in NA.
With international success in 2018, Laroque stated that he is unsure if he can direct Computeropolis due to his focus on directing Mech Girl. Mccartney as Peri Dazz, has also stated about possible 5 installment we see if plan for 5 film go well. 3 day later, Universal confirmed that 5 installment is already moving forward from Universal Animation Studios even though 4 film did not do well in NA, we have decided to move forward for 5 Computeropolis movie due to last film international success. Mccartney and Spade have expressed interests in reprising their roles in 5 film. While 5 installment is in early development, Laroque announced that he will not be directing 5 film to work on his original movie Mech Girl instead, but will remain as executive producer like he did in 3 film and will still write screenplay to 5 film. In 2018, it was report that Gary Hall co director of Paradoria is in talk to 5 installment.
