Crystal: The Lost Realms is a 2015 American 3D computer-animated fantasy adventure film produced by 20th Century Fox Animation. It is the third installment in the Crystal franchise, and the sequel to Crystal: Coming of Darkness (2011). The film was directed by Kevin Lima and written by Phillip Melton, Chris Matheson, and David Lindsay-Abaire. Avril Lavigne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Wayne Brady, Megan Mullally, Sam Elliott, Whoopi Goldberg, Gary Oldman, and Emily Blunt reprise their roles from the previous films while they are joined by Paul Giamatti, Selena Gomez, Kristin Chenoweth, Samuel L. Jackson, and J. K. Simmons, respectively. In the film, after Crystal and Jake Turner get married, the king of the land demands Crystal to fulfil her destiny to find and resurrect the lost realms thanks to Walsmoke hundreds of years ago.

Crystal: The Lost Realms premiered at the Regency Village Theater in Los Angeles on May 17, 2015, and was theatrically released in the United States on May 29 in RealD 3D. Like its predecessors, the film received generally positive reviews while grossing $890 million worldwide against its $118 million budget, becoming the ninth highest-grossing film of 2015 and the third highest-grossing animated film of the year (behind Minions and Inside Out). It received a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 43rd Annie Awards, and was also nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 88th Academy Awards. A fourth and final film, titled Crystal: The Rise of Darkness, was released on September 13, 2019.

In December 2011, 20th Century Fox announced that Crystal: The Lost Realms would be released on November 21, 2014. In July 2012, the film was moved to its release date of October 17, 2014, to avoid competition with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1. By December 2012, the film's release date was later shifted to May 22, 2015 with The Book of Life taking the October date. In November 2013, the release date was once again shifted, this time a week later to May 29, 2015, to avoid competition with Spy before that film was moved up to June 5.

The film premiered on May 17, 2015, as a special screening at the Regency Village Theater. Crystal: The Lost Realms was digitally remastered into IMAX 3D format and released in select international IMAX theatres across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.

Marketing[]

Fox teamed up with marketing partners in the United States and Canada to promote the film through McDonald's Happy Meals with a set of 9 toys. A tie-in comic was released on May 7, 2015, collecting two prelude issues.

The first trailer was released online at 20th Century Fox's YouTube page on October 14, 2014. The official theatrical trailer for the film was released on January 12, 2015. The final trailer was released on March 25, 2015.

Home media[]

Crystal: The Lost Realms was released on DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D on November 10, 2015. The film was later released on 4K Blu-Ray on September 3, 2019.

Critical response[]

Crystal: The Lost Realms has received generally positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a rating of 69%, based on 167 reviews, with an average rating of 6.4/10. On Metacritic, the film has a score of 51 out of 100, based on 20 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale, while those at PostTrak gave it an overall positive score of 78% (including an average 4 out of 5 stars), with 62% saying they would definitely recommend it.

Awards and nominations[]

The film was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 88th Academy Awards and the 43rd Annie Awards, However, the Awards both went to Pixar's Inside Out.
