Hop 2: Easter Eggstravaganza! is a 2016 American live-action/computer-animated Easter fantasy adventure comedy film produced by Illuminaton Entertainment, Relativity Media, Original Film and Media Rights Capital, and distributed by Universal Pictures. A sequel to the 2011 film Hop, it is directed by Mike Mitchell based on a story by the writing team Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, who conceived the screenplay with Brian Lynch. The film reprises the roles of James Marsden, Russell Brand, Kaley Cuoco, Gary Cole, Elizabeth Perkins and Tiffany Espensen, and features John Goodman. Set five years after the events of the first film, E.B., who is now 27, manages an Easter factory with his human friend Fred O'Hare, spreading joy to children around the world. However, a mischievous rabbit named Jasper steals the magic Golden Egg, causing chaos among the factory. With the factory on the brink of collapsing, E.B. and Fred set out of the factory to retrieve the Golden Egg out of the clutches of Jasper before any nefarious decisions could be made, which would lead to him destroying the magic of Easter.
Following the negative critical reception of Hop in 2011, Illumination Entertainment said that a sequel to Hop would "not be feasible". In April 2014, Mike Mitchell was announced to direct a sequel to the film, with Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio returning to write the story and the screenplay with Brian Lynch. Neal H. Moritz was brought to produce the film. Principal photography commenced in Los Angeles in January 2015. The animation, unlike the first film, was produced by Weta Digital.
Hop 2: Easter Eggstravaganza! premiered at Universal Studios Hollywood on March 12, 2016, before it was theatrically released on March 27, 2016 in the United States. Unlike its predecessor, where it received negative reviews, the sequel received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise for the human performances, voice acting, animation, music, cinematography and direction, with many deeming it an improvement over its predecessor. Produced on a budget of $120 million, the film grossed $819 million worldwide, becoming the eighth-highest grossing film of 2016 behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Production[]
Production on a Hop sequel was considered "not feasible" by Illumination Entertainment founder and CEO Chris Meledandri following the film's disappointing critical reactions. Meledandri further stated that: "for now, [Hop] will be our only production that will combine live-action and computer-animation." In April 2014, Mike Mitchell was revealed to direct a Hop sequel, revealed in an article published by Variety. Chris Meledandri revealed in said article that "after careful consideration with the production team, and after having talks with Mike Mitchell, we're proud to announce that a Hop sequel is being made."
James Marsden was revealed to return as the role of Fred O'Hare, with Russell Brand also returning as the voice of E.B. in July 2014. Other returning cast members include Kaley Cuoco, Gary Cole, Elizabeth Perkins and Tiffany Espensen, all of whom were revealed to return for the sequel in November 2014. In March 2015, acclaimed actor and comedian John Goodman was revealed to be the voice of Jasper, who Chris Meledandri described as "a mischievous rabbit with particularly nefarious intentions". Peter de Sève created the designs for Jasper.
Principal photography for the film commenced in Los Angeles in January 2015.
Animation and visual effects[]
Unlike the first film, where the CGI animation was done by Rhythm & Hues Studios, the animation for the sequel was done by Weta Digital, and the visual effects were produced by Moving Picture Company, DNEG and Digital Domain.
Soundtrack[]
Hop 2: Easter Eggstravaganza! (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack album for the film. Chris Meledandri originally wanted to have Michael Giacchino compose the score for the film, but he turned it down to work on Inside Out. Then, in June 2015, the team was notified that Christopher Lennertz, who had composed the score for Hop, would return to compose the score for the sequel.
Singers Macklemore and Ryan Lewis of the eponymous hip hop duo of the same name, with Avril Lavigne, performed the song "E.B.", which was also written by Christopher Lennertz and produced by the latter with Ali Dee Theodore and DeeTown Entertainment and Ryan Lewis. The song was included in the film's official soundtrack album, and was released as a separate single on April 1, 2016 by Macklemore LLC and Columbia Records. The soundtrack album was released by Back Lot Music on March 31, 2016.
