Life of Mice is a 1997 American animated adventure comedy film produced by Peter Young Productions and distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film was directed by Peter Young from a script written by Young, Jymn Magon, and Philip LaZebnik, based on a story by Randall McCormick, LaZebnik, and Drew Cohen. The voice cast features David Spade, Winona Ryder, Steve Martin, Eric Idle, John Cleese, Whoopi Goldberg, Chevy Chase, and Cheech Marin.

The film follows a young mouse named Theodore who is separated from his group and must find his way back to the group while traveling through different countries of the world. Along the way, Theodore meets Tina, an adventurous mouse and a small friendly cat named Shawn, where they must escape from an evil predator wanting to eat the mice.

Life of Mice was released to theaters on November 26, 1997. Upon release, it was met with mixed-to-positive reviews from critics. However, while grossing $103 million worldwide on its $65 million budget, the film underperformed disappointingly at the box office, most likely due to the fact that it was overshadowed by Fox Animation Studios' Anastasia, which was released around the same time, forcing a writedown of $57.3 million for Paramount.

Marketing[]

A teaser trailer was released in theaters on March 26, 1997, and the official trailer was released on July 25, 1997 with Good Burger. The film was accompanied with a promotional campaign with licensees including Hardee's/Carl's Jr., Mattel, Kellogg's, Nickelodeon and UPN

Release[]

Life of Mice was originally scheduled to be released on July 25, 1997. But production setbacks delayed the release to Thanksgiving 1997 with Nickelodeon’s Good Burger being scheduled to fill in the absence.

Home media[]

Life of Mice was first released on home media on VHS and Laserdisc on June 9, 1998 with THX certification and interviews with the cast. In December 1998, Variety reported it was the eighth best-selling home video release of the year selling 9.2 million copies and garnering $142 million. It was later released on DVD for the first time on July 2, 2002, alongside the home media releases of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, with an audio commentary by the filmmakers and both full-screen and widescreen versions on one disc, among other stuff. On October 23, 2010, it was re-released as a Blu-ray/DVD combo, which, in addition to containing most, if not all, of the special features from the previous DVD release, adds in new bonus features that weren't available on that release. On March 14, 2017, it was released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for its 20th anniversary.

On March 4, 2021, Life of Mice, along with other Paramount Animated films, became available on Paramount+.
