Ruby Gloom and the Lost Shadows is an upcoming animated musical dark fantasy film inspired by the television series Ruby Gloom, which in turn is based on the Mighty Fine apparel line of the same name, created by illustrator Martin Hsu. Directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane from a screenplay by Robert L. Baird and Lloyd Taylor and a story by Baird, Taylor, Pamela Ribon, Marc Haimes, Bruno, Quane and Keith Bunin, the film stars the voices of Sarah Gadon, Wagner Moura, and Gal Gadot.
The film focuses on Ruby, who discovers an old music box that reveals her long-lost family is still alive but trapped in the mysterious Forgotten Veil by the sinister Hollow Duke and Duchess. With the help of her friends, she embarks on a journey to uncover her origins and reunite with her family.
Produced by 20th Century Animation, TSG Entertainment, Annapurna Pictures, and Nelvana, the film is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 31, 2025, by 20th Century Studios.
Plot[]
Ruby Gloom was once an ordinary ragdoll, beloved by a little girl who found solace in her imagination to escape an emotionally abusive home. Isolated and misunderstood, the girl created fantastical stories where she and Ruby could be happy. But tragedy struck, and in the aftermath, the girl's consciousness was mysteriously transferred into her ragdoll, awakening in a strange and eerie town known as Gloomsville.
Years later, Ruby Gloom has always embraced the spooky yet cozy world of Gloomsville, living in her Victorian mansion with her cat Doom Kitty and a close-knit group of eccentric friends: the unlucky but endearing Misery, the eccentric Skull Boy, the fearless and hyperactive Iris, the musical duo Frank & Len, and the cowardly Scaredy Bat. Despite her bright outlook, Ruby has always felt a strange emptiness, as if something—or someone—is missing.
One night, while exploring the attic of Gloomsville Manor, Ruby stumbles upon an old, dust-covered music box. When she opens it, a haunting lullaby plays, and a vision of shadowy figures appears before her. A cryptic message inside the box hints that her real family—her mother Judy, her father Douglas, and her older brother Drake—are still alive but lost in a place called the Forgotten Veil. Determined to uncover the truth, Ruby embarks on a journey beyond Gloomsville, joined by her friends. Along the way, they encounter three sophisticated crows—Edgar, Allan, and Poe—who claim to know of the Forgotten Veil and warn them of the dangers that lie ahead.
Their journey takes them through eerie forests, an abandoned carnival, and long-forgotten ruins, each location presenting magical and mysterious challenges. As they venture further, the shadows grow stronger, whispering doubts and fears into their minds. Misery’s bad luck brings unexpected twists, Skull Boy struggles with his ever-changing sense of identity, and Iris’s reckless curiosity nearly leads them astray.
Eventually, they reach the entrance to the Forgotten Veil, a shadowy dimension where lost things—and lost souls—are trapped. There, they come face-to-face with the Hollow Duke, a sinister entity who feeds on loneliness, and his wife, the Hollow Duchess, who thrives on lust and temptation. The Duke preys on Ruby's deepest fear—that she was never truly wanted—while the Duchess lures victims with illusions of love and desire.
Ruby finds her family, but they are trapped in the Duke's web, their memories stripped away. They no longer remember who they were or who Ruby was. Worse, the shadows of the Veil begin to pull Ruby and her friends in, tempting them with their own hidden desires and fears. Refusing to let the darkness consume them, Ruby uses the power of music—the same lullaby from the music box—to break through her family’s lost memories. One by one, Judy, Douglas, and Drake start to remember, their true selves returning. Her friends also resist the shadows, realizing that their flaws and quirks are part of what makes them special.
Enraged, the Hollow Duke and Duchess unleash their full power, but Ruby and her friends fight back. With the strength of their bonds and the light of their spirits, they shatter the illusion of the Forgotten Veil, freeing the trapped souls and defeating the Hollow Duke and Duchess. As the Veil collapses, Ruby is faced with a choice—return to the human world with her family or stay in Gloomsville with her chosen family. But then she realizes: she doesn’t have to choose. Her family, now free and whole again, chooses to stay with her in Gloomsville, embracing the world Ruby has built for herself.
With both her past and present united, Ruby finally feels complete. As Gloomsville celebrates her return, she reflects on the journey: family isn’t just about where you come from—it’s about those who stand by you, in light and in darkness. Ruby, her friends, and her reunited family embrace the spooky, wonderful life they now share together.
Cast[]
- Sarah Gadon as Ruby Gloom, a cheerful and resourceful girl who was once an ordinary ragdoll owned by a lonely girl. After a tragic accident, the girl's consciousness was transferred into the doll. Now living in Gloomsville, Ruby maintains an eternally optimistic outlook, embracing the eerie and unusual aspects of her life. Despite her positive demeanor, she secretly longs to uncover the truth about her past. When she finds out that her family may still be alive, she embarks on a journey to discover her origins. Throughout her adventure, she learns that family is about more than just blood; it's truly about love and support.
- Tara Strong as Doom Kitty, Ruby's silent but ever-loyal feline companion. Though she doesn't speak, Doom Kitty communicates through meows, expressive gestures, and knowing looks. She often senses danger before anyone else and plays a key role in guiding Ruby throughout her journey.
- Emily Hampshire as Misery, a melancholic, accident-prone girl with a long history of unfortunate ancestors. Despite her constant bad luck, Misery remains surprisingly resilient. Her misfortunes often lead to unexpected solutions, making her an essential part of the adventure.
- Scott McCord as Skull Boy, a highly intelligent but identity-challenged skeleton who believes he could be descended from any number of historical figures. Throughout the journey, he struggles with self-doubt, fearing he has no real identity. However, he eventually realizes that he doesn't need a famous lineage to be special—he is enough as he is.
- Stacey DePass as Iris, a hyperactive daredevil with an insatiable curiosity. Her adventurous nature often leads the group into trouble, but her bravery also helps them push forward. Iris learns that while curiosity is valuable, some mysteries are best approached with caution.
- David Berni and Jeremy O. Harris as Frank and Len, a two-headed musician duo who share a single body but very different personalities. Frank is laid-back and mellow, while Len is more excitable and ambitious. Despite their occasional disagreements, their musical talents help Ruby unlock the secrets of her past through the power of song.
- Peter Keleghan as Scaredy Bat, a timid, easily frightened bat who prefers staying in the safety of Gloomsville but joins the journey out of loyalty to Ruby. Though he is initially afraid of everything, he finds his inner courage when it matters most.
- Teri Hatcher as Judy Gloom, Ruby's kind-hearted but mysterious mother who was trapped in the Forgotten Veil along with her family. She was once an artist and storyteller, inspiring Ruby's imagination as a child. Despite being lost for years, she never stopped believing in the power of love and dreams.
- John Hodgman as Douglas Gloom, Ruby's eccentric, brilliant father who was an inventor before being taken to the Forgotten Veil. He often built whimsical contraptions for his children, and his creations played a role in Ruby's early fascination with the unusual. In the Veil, his mind was clouded, but Ruby's return helps him rediscover his spark.
- Jeremy Shada as Drake Gloom, Ruby's mischievous but protective older brother. Unlike his parents, who succumbed to the Veil's spell, Drake has been resisting its effects for years, searching for a way to escape. He is fiercely loyal and acts as a protective figure for Ruby once they reunite.
- Edgar, Allan, and Poe are three sophisticated, gothic crows who serve as cryptic guides for Ruby and her friends, offering riddles and obscure knowledge about the Forgotten Veil. They are old-fashioned intellectuals who detest modern technology, preferring the elegance of poetry, candlelit libraries, and the written word over the distractions of the present day. They're voiced by the following actors:
- Jonathan Romesh Ranganathan as Edgar, the most dramatic and brooding of the trio who often speaks in poetic riddles and quotes classic literature.
- Ralph Fiennes as Allan, the more pragmatic and logical of the trio who acts as the voice of reason when the other two get carried away.
- Adrian Truss as Poe, the most cynical of the trio who always makes dry, sarcastic remarks about the foolishness of the living.
- Wagner Moura as the Hollow Duke, a powerful, sinister entity who thrives on loneliness, trapping lost souls in the Forgotten Veil. He manipulates Ruby's fears, trying to convince her that she was never truly wanted. His goal is to make Ruby surrender to isolation so he can feed on her despair.
- Gal Gadot as the Hollow Duchess, the Duke's equally malevolent wife who feeds not on loneliness, but on lust. She tempts lost souls with illusions of passion and devotion, preying on their deepest desires. Unlike her husband, who isolates, she entices—only to ensnare her victims forever.
- Piper Rubio as Maya, an emotionally abused seven-year-old girl who grew up with her parents and her older brother.
